Burraco with three players: the rules

Burraco is one of the most intriguing and engaging games, accessible to all, from pre-teenage youngsters to elderly adults. Burraco was introduced in Italy around the years of the post-war period and its success since then has proven unstoppable.

It is played with two decks of French cards, the same as those used for Pinnacolo. Each deck contains 52 cards, including 4 jokers. Burraco is a very versatile game, as it does not require a fixed number of players, but offers different variants for more players.

You can choose to play the game individually, or if there are four players, to organise two opposing teams. The aim of the game is to finish the game first, being left with no cards in hand.

The three-player variant

Burraco with three players involves a slightly different game dynamic compared to the two-player or four-player version. First of all, after shuffling the cards, the dealer, before officially starting the game, prepares two packets of cards (the pozzetti) to their right: the first with 11 cards and the second with 18 cards.

The next phase involves distributing 11 cards to each player. The deck with the remaining cards is placed in the centre of the table; one card from this deck is turned face up and acts as the discard pile.

During play, each player must lay down cards in a way that follows a run, based on colour or suit. The first player to exhaust their cards in hand will be able to take the pozzetto of 18 cards and will have to play against the other two players, who will play together and split the final score of the game in two.

Burraco with three players allows for a fun and entertaining game even when the number of players is odd. The special feature of this variant is that it creates a dynamic and unpredictable game.

Unlike pair Burraco, the three-player version is more dynamic, because the alliances between players and the teams are not established in advance, but take shape as the game unfolds.

In the initial phase of three-player Burraco, the players are individual and play one against all; only in the final phase of the game are the two players left with cards in hand forced to ally against the single opponent.

Burraco is undoubtedly a game that keeps the mind alert and active: all participants must follow more or less complex strategies in order to finish the game in the best possible way and enjoy the victory by achieving a substantial score.
