International Burraco: rules and differences

Burraco, the well-known card game that has achieved an incredibly high level of success in Italy, has also managed to achieve equally extraordinary success in the rest of the world, to the point of being played in almost every country.

In this regard it should be noted that every country has its own variant of the Burraco rules, and the international version is the one played during official tournaments.

It is therefore important to know these differences so that, if you take part in a tournament or play against a foreign player, respecting the rules can remain a constant that does not negatively affect the outcome of the game.

The differences between Italian and international Burraco are essentially four, all of them very important.

The international rules of Burraco

First rule: if a player, at any stage of the game, draws from the discard pile, they must play a combination.

Suppose a player has a 3, 4 and 6 of clubs and also a 7, 8 and 9 of spades in hand, and on the table there is a 6, 7 and 8 of hearts; in the discard pile there are an ace of coins, a 5 of clubs, a 9 of hearts and a 6 of spades. By drawing from the discards the player will have to: lay down the combination 3, 4, 5 and 6 of clubs; add the 9 of hearts to the run already on the table; lay down the spades combination even without the 6.

Second rule: to close the game, players must have at least one Clean Burraco on the table. Therefore the Semi-Clean Burraco is not recognised and the Dirty Burraco does not allow the game to be closed.

Third rule: combinations of cards of the same value (three 5s, four Kings, etc.) are not permitted, except where they consist of three or more aces.

Fourth rule: the Semi-Clean Burraco does not exist as a valid combination.

These are the four rules that make international Burraco different from Italian Burraco, where: you can draw from the stock pile or from the discards without having to lay down combinations; the Semi-Clean Burraco exists; even a Dirty Burraco is enough to close the game; three-of-a-kinds, four-of-a-kinds and other combinations with identical cards are valid regardless of their value.

International Burraco therefore takes on a more strongly strategic tone, requires a higher level of attention, allows for strategies based less on luck and more on reasoning, and tends to make games longer and more competitive.

It is good to know these rules so that two people from different countries can take part in a game of Burraco without variants of the rules advantaging one player at the expense of the other, making games as balanced as they are rich in competition.
